Welcome to the Sunday edition of the Chinese domain market report.
China’s domain investors were apparently looking for a sure, stable investment in domain names and the explosive growth of “Chips” – four letter domains that exclude vowels and the letter “V” – somehow appeared to meet all the criteria of a money-maker.
Alas, chips alone don’t taste good without salsa, and one has to dip their hand in other, juicy investments in order to succeed.
A hard lesson for our Chinese friends, that are now selling LLLL’s as fast as you can eat a hot noodle soup in Shanghai.
But has the domain “Chips” marketplace bottomed out?
While we can’t predict the future, we can and should be very cautious about future investments involving domain assets that only serve as stock, without development in mind. Domaining is not a fantasy game when it’s played with real money, especially other people’s money.
Can we blame inexperienced, “newbie” investors for putting faith in those arrogant voices that presented themselves as “experts,” who pumped the market promoting chips non-stop as a Promised Land of milk and honey?
Let’s see who has benefited so far from the gaming of the domain chips market – which started in China by a fund with money to spare:
Those Chinese fund managers made the most money out of the game, by pumping the value of assets that appreciated almost overnight. Then there those acting on insider information who bought at various levels of increasing value, and flipped their acquisitions, sometimes more than once. Lastly, there are those domain investors who sold at the peak of the market, anticipating the market’s correction and cashed in their chips.
Many more will be left holding the bag. We told you so.
As we keep track of Chinese domain sales of .CN and .COM domains of between 2 to 4 characters in length, today’s list is presented below.
