In 1988 you could register just about any domain name you wanted. The internet was not available, for the most part, in a commercial package.
Dot .com domain names were already being registered, albeit a trickle at a time, since March 15, 1985 that Symbolics.com was granted registration.
Exactly three years later, the domain name AOCGL.com was registered; the domain retains its original registration date of March 14, 1988.
The domain’s original registrant, Theodore “Ted” Manos Sr., registered the domain name AOCGL.com as an exact acronym of his business, Alpha Omega Consulting Group Ltd (AOCGL.)
By 2000, the company was apparently dissolved and there was never a corporate web site, as far as Archive.org content shows. The domain was most likely used for email communications.
Think about it for a second, though: You could register any .com domain at the time, including one of the following:
- Alpha.com (1997)
- Omega.com (1993)
- AlphaOmega.com (1995)
In 1988, registering the .com acronym makes sense, as the use of domains as exact matches of the business was the sole reason for granting a domain’s registration at the time. One had to provide a good reason for registering any domain and everything was carefully examined in the true bureaucratic sense; registrations were filed on printed forms and the paperwork was handled manually.
Currently, the domain AOCGL.com appears to be in the possession of Luigi Marruso, domain investor and founder of Domain Empire.
Marruso sold AN.net via Sedo, as reported earlier today.
