Midwest Tungsten Service was founded in 1958, offering raw materials such as tungsten and tungsten heavy metal alloys, molybdenum, and tantalum.
The company has been operating from the domain name midwesttungsten.com but its best-kept secret is that it also owns Tungsten.com for more than 20 years. In fact, per this Archive.org record, the domain Tungsten.com was used by the company as early as in 1998.
It’s not clear when the company switched to the longer variant but it’s clear that they used Tungsten.com to forward to their corporate content.
The company shared news of its domain rebranding recently and while the corporate name still remains, the domain will default to Tungsten.com.
Why such an interest in a rare earth metal, you might ask.
Tungsten, or wolframium, is a chemical element with the symbol W and atomic number 74. Tungsten is a rare metal found naturally on earth almost exclusively as compounds with other elements. Its density makes it feel unnaturally heavy for its size, when formed into shapes such as spheres or cubes.
Apparently, tungsten cubes became popular with cryptocurrency enthusiasts late last year, leading to a tungsten craze. It’s quite clear that the official rebranding of Midwest Tungsten Service as Tungsten.com rides on the increased demand for its tungsten products.
Many thanks to our reader Michal for the tip!
Oh, I didn’t realize they already owned the name so long ago, I was thinking it was a recent acquisition and was interested to find any news about the acquisition price. I guess there was none. Thanks for checking it out 🙂
Michal, thanks again for the tip.
