Fadi Chehadé, President and CEO of ICANN, gave a monumental speech today, International Workers’ Day, over the Internet.
Grabbing the Twitter phone and pasting his speech in 140 character segments was never easier; the energetic ICANN president is well capable of performing more complex tasks, such as defining the multi-stakeholder model to his worldwide audience, or the metaphoric lack of necessity for training wheels.
Said Chehadé:
“NETmundial was an exhilarating and unique experience, and my heart and soul jumped with excitement over our great community. Together, united like a fist – five separate fingers pointing in one direction – we should govern the Internet in the future.”
Applause was phenomenal, even from non-ICANN members who enjoy listening to the charismatic leader of the free Internet world.
As today, May 1st, is a special day dedicated to all workers, Fadi Chehadé noted:
“As I commented during one of the sessions at NETmundial, my brothers and sisters in Brazil and Latin America breathe the wind that energized our discussions there over two days. The pervasive spirit of cooperation and collaboration shall take everyone of us and all together, united as one until there is no more US government governance to annoy our incentive for peace, love and unity. I hope that spirit continues in the months to come as we continue on this journey to evolved Internet governance together.”
By that time, everyone at the ICANN hall was on their feet, some weeping with emotion, as Fadi Chehadé waved and then exited from the podium, to thank each and everyone in person.
“It’s days like this that make life on the Internet worth living,” said former ICANN CEO, Rod Beckstrom, congratulating Fadi Chehadé as the latter entered the motorcade to the airport.
We are now anticipating ICANN 50, that takes place in London, UK between June 22 – 26, a difficult feat, given that it will be held in the heart of World Cup 2014 in Brazil.
