GoDaddy is canceling all $0.99 orders placed on its marketplace yesterday, April 1st, according to a company spokesperson.
“Somehow, our blindly loyal customers didn’t realize we were just playing an April Fools prank,” said Marina Tomey of GoDaddy.
“We are in the domain registration business intending to make money, not lose money!” exclaimed Tomey, smiling.
By charging $0.99 for domain registrations and then removing this discount, GoDaddy is now expected to earn millions of dollars in a single day.
The so-called April Fools trickery wasn’t seen as funny by many domain investors, who rushed to use the coupon code ‘YGHLJOKEVBK‘ issued by GoDaddy for the purpose of the prank.
“They screwed up with Groupon not too long ago, and now they are renegging on the $0.99 coupon?” said Charles Proctor, a domainer from Asheville, NC. “Well, they can just go f*ck themselves, I’ve had it with GoDaddy!“ exclaimed Proctor, getting hold of a loaded semi-automatic rifle.
Dozens of other domainers are planning national protests against the retracted coupon code by GoDaddy; marches are planned for Washington, Austin, Thompkinsville and Escondido. Some intend to designate April as “National DropDaddy” month.
GoDaddy is offering a nude Bar Refaeli poster, and an autographed picture of Danica Patrick in full NASCAR gear, in exchange.
