The war of new gTLDs involving two related keywords, .Game and .Games, might have ended before it even began.
Uniregistry rolled out its 7 day EAP phase for dot .Game, with domains costing as much as $11,000 dollars.
But if you thought you’d wait it out until the EAP period ends, keep in mind the basic renewal fee for .Game domains is quite steep.
GoDaddy charges $359.99 dollars per year, while Uniregistry offers a discounted price of “only” $318.88 dollars per year.
That’s almost a dollar a day! 🙁
Those registration and renewal fees automatically classify dot .Game as a gTLD aimed at games companies; game enthusiasts and common folk won’t be able to afford the high renewal fees.
With Rightside rolling out dot .Games later this year, let’s hope that their pricing structure won’t be following the Uniregistry paradigm.
The gaming companies are going to have a great advantage with these new gTLDs. I am still more excited about .games though since I see more possibilities for that extension in the gaming world.
