It’s a great day for the registrant of the aged domain Grok.com, as Elon Musk’s new AI chatbot is called Grok.
Grok is a neologism that indicates understanding someone with empathy; the word was coined in the 1960 by fiction writer Robert Heinlein. Elon Musk’s choice of a keyword indicates that its AI bot will listen tentatively to questions placed by its paid users.
Says X.ai about Grok:
“Grok is designed to answer questions with a bit of wit and has a rebellious streak, so please don’t use it if you hate humor! A unique and fundamental advantage of Grok is that it has real-time knowledge of the world via the 𝕏 platform. It will also answer spicy questions that are rejected by most other AI systems.”
Naturally, the introduction of Grok sparked a flurry of domain registrations with the “Grok” keyword.
For example, the domain Grok.bot is up for sale at Dan with a price tag of $45,000 dollars. The domains Grok.ai and Grok.io are also parked for sale at Afternic, along with Grok.co.
There are dozens, if not hundreds of Grok domains that are being registered in hope of catching up on the new trend.
Meanwhile, Grok.com appears to have been parked with a “Hello!” lander for the past decade or longer. Will Elon Musk’s X.ai project pay a fair price to acquire it?
Just ask Grok. Or use ChatGPT.
