The US government plans to relinquish control of ICANN by 2015, in an act of globalism that although discussed extensively, left many wondering about its timing.
Constantine Roussos of dot .music wondered how this is going to be facilitated:
“Making such a substantial change during the launch of a new gTLD Program that is full of unresolved issues, inconsistencies and problems is premature in my opinion. Why not wait until after ICANN fixes all the issues that are overarching in the new gTLD Program before changing the ICANN structure?”
Meanwhile, ICANN released a video interview of its Board Chair, Steve Crocker, who called the decision “pretty significant”:
ICANN 49 takes place in Singapore, between March 23 and 27, and will offer ground for substantial debate on this decision, for and against.
