Mozilla to shut down Pocket—Will it sell Pocket.com?

Mozilla announced today that it’s shutting down two of its projects, Pocket and Fakespot, in order to concentrate on the development of Firefox.

Pocket is a content bookmarking service while Fakespot is a browser extension that helps people identify fake reviews online.

On July 8th, 2025, Pocket will shut down and its users will be able to download their data until October 8th. Mozilla’s Pocket product operates from GetPocket.com but the company also uses the domain Pocket.com as a forward.

Registered in 1995, Pocket.com was initially an email provider and a cellular services company; Mozilla transformed it into Pocket’s domain in 2012, offering a more streamlined and user-friendly experience. Mozilla integrated Pocket into Firefox in 2015 and subsequently acquired the company in February 2017.

It seems that due to shutting down the service completely, the domain Pocket.com might be up for grabs, presenting an opportunity for wealthy domain investors and start-up founders to take a chance at acquiring this premium, aged domain from Mozilla.
