The dot .NYC gTLD launched with much fanfare, and a direct order for non New Yorkers to stay the hell out.
New York City is bigger in population than many small nations, so there’s always a chance that some friction will occur among its numerous, multi-cultural inhabitants.
An incident involving threats on Facebook, appears to have manifested when blogger Ed Garcia Conde alleges to have been blackmailed by a fellow female blogger, who registered two variants of a domain name he operates.
In a nutshell, Conde operates Welcome2TheBronx.com and he’s known by that handle; Ruth Papazian, aka “Bronx Hipster” went ahead and snagged Welcome2TheBronx.nyc and WelcomeToTheBronx.nyc, triggering a number of posts by Conde.
You can imagine the rest of the story, once Papazian asked Conde to give her $250 dollars and issue an apology over allegedly disparaging comments he posted about her.
