South Sudan has become the world’s newest nation, after breaking away from Sudan.
Which can only mean one thing: domain registration frenzy.
Or does it?
In fact, SouthSudan.com has been registered since 2003 and so are most other TLDs, such as .net, .org, .info etc.
Owning a country name in .com is always a trump card and such domain names can become very valuable, especially those of larger countries.
Unfortunately, SouthSudan.com is essentially parked, displaying eNom’s infamous “backpack girl”, also known as “eNom girl.”
The official name of the newest nation in the world is “Republic of South Sudan” – this is also taken in most major TLDs since 2010.
So far there is no indication about what the ISO 3166 code for South Sudan will be, which determines its official ccTLD.
The Sudan country code is SD. Let’s hope that the code for South Sudan won’t be used as an “opportunity TLD” like .so for Somalia or .cm for Cameroon.
South Sudan has a Wikipedia entry as well.

is * SouthSudan* the official name ?? thanks , 2w
It’s as official as “USA” for “United States of America”.
I heard Alaska will break off too so reg South Alaska.com and SouthColumbia dot co
BullS – South Alaska is a natural evolution, with Sarah Palin becoming Queen.
I picked up a bunch of the South Sudan domains a while back. All we need now is an infrastructure down there and a little economic development. Domain names are not what’s on most people’s minds there right now. But maybe soon. I see that Sudan.com sold for $120K at Sedo last year.
Any takers for EasternLibya.com ? I’m hoping for an east-west split in that country.
Lol we bought southsudan.com and sudan.com as well as a bunch of cities there years ago.. We have a number of contacts there and a business associate that does a lot of work there said it was just a matter of time before they separated. We had actually approached the communication representatives at an ICANN conference well before they had independence, but they just didnt have the cash to pay what we wanted. Their loss really
