Pilot.com sale for $400k unveiled sales price of Courier.com

The domain name Pilot.com was acquired by a startup that spent $400,000 dollars from its initial funding round.

Waseem Daher, Founder and CEO at Pilot, shared the process of domain acquisition; getting $3 million in funds was a decisive step in the process:

At that time, we were six people in an office above a fried chicken restaurant.

$400K was a lot of cash.

We only went for it because we had raised a $3M seed round, and I believed that the long-term branding benefit outweighed the short-term cost.

That was in 2017—these days premium domains of the same caliber can easily go for seven figures. Start-ups hoping to acquire such premium domains for a few thousands often go to Plan B, filing a UDRP and getting hit with a reality check.

The discussion about Pilot.com on LinkedIn unveiled two undocumented domain sales, that of Courier.com for $200,000 dollars, and that of Twingate.com for $4,000 dollars.
