Register.to owner passed away, leaving .to registrants in limbo

Some unfortunate news: The owner of Register.to, an operator and reseller of .to domains, has passed away, according to reports.

Domain names that end in the .to extension are safe, as the Registry is operated by Tonic.to.

What are .to domains?

From Wikipedia:

.to is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) of the Kingdom of Tonga. The government of Tonga sells domains in its ccTLD to any interested party. The .to ccTLD is administered by the Tonga Network Information Center (Tonic).

In an email sent out to a customer of Register.to, Tonic responded thus:

“With reference to your recent enquiry, we regret to advise that following the recent death of the owner, Register.to no longer functions and is no longer a reseller of Tonic. Tonic has no information concerning the financial affairs of Register.to.”

Meanwhile, domain registrants of .to domains with a cash balance at Register.to, might have trouble getting their funds out.
