Stadia.com: Google drops service built on 1994 domain name

Google, operators of the gaming platform Stadia, announced that it’s terminating the service.

Built on the acquired domain name Stadia.com, Google’s Stadia is a cloud gaming service developed and operated by Google. It is accessible through Chromecast Ultra and Android TV devices, on personal computers via the Google Chrome web browser and other browsers.

Not enough traction among gamers is now leading Google to announce an end of life for Stadia and Stadia.com will most likely forward to Google.com.

In 2019, Google acquired the domain Stadia.com from its previous owners, a sports and street fashion brand that registered a trademark for STADIA, citing first use in 2007.

They had acquired the domain in 2010, for just $3,601 dollars at a SnapNames expired domains auction. The domain retains its original registration date of 1994.

Google is not known for releasing or selling domain names linked to brands it created. The word stadia (Στάδια) is the plural form of the Greek word stadion (Στάδιον) a reference to a sports stadium or arena in ancient Greece. It’s also a reference to a distance equal to the length of a stadion venue, or about 180 meters.
