Back in the late 1990’s, the Internet was still young and innocent.
Then domaining began to attract opportunists; the 6:30am domain gold rush was the finest moment in the new round of up and coming domain investors, that gave birth to Frank Schilling‘s domain empire.
One can still make money in domaining, and there is nothing wrong with “demanding” large amounts of money for a decent generic .com.
But nearly $100 million dollars for an obscure .com? Come on.
Registered in 1996, the domain name Subspace.com dropped, and was re-registered in 1997, at a time that a popular online game by the same name generated plenty of type-in and search engine traffic.
Remarkably, its owner at the time exclaimed any relation to the domain, and pointed visitors to various search engines instead. If only PPC monetization solutions had been invented!
Its current registrant is asking potential buyers to cash out $99,999,999 “or best offer” for the domain, that might or might not command ample traffic these days.
The popular online space game has been re-incarnated as Subspace: Continuum; it brings back fond memories of playing it online in 1997, at an era when ping times were truly horrible even on a dedicated connection.
The owners of Subspace.com will never get $100 million for the domain, particularly when the Subspace gaming community operates from Subspace.co. Another win for the .CO Registry.
