It’s official: Super Bowl “L”, to take place in Santa Clara, California on February 7, 2016 will be known as “Super Bowl 50” instead.
No Roman numerals for that year, because the letter “L” was deemed impractical in designs, and also a reminder of the word “Loser.”
Which brings up the obvious question: is the owner of SuperBowl50.com in trouble, or sitting on a pile of gold?
Super Bowl might be a registered trademark, but the domain SuperBowl50.com was registered in 2006, and it’s currently up for sale.
The .net and .biz variants have been registered recently, while the .us was registered eight years ago. The .org is up for grabs, if you feel adventurous with the WIPO.
Once that season is over, numbering will continue with Roman numerals in place; thankfully, SuperBowlLI.com is owned by the NFL.
