Took 22 years for Almond.com to be professionally developed, and Silk milk paid for it

Sometime in the summer of 1995, domain names transitioned from free, controlled and limited requests to paid registrations of $100 dollars a pop, pre-paid for two years.

In August 1995, Almond.com was registered by Gary Almond, who spent money every year since, renewing the domain.

For 22 years, Almond.com has been the repository of Mr. Almond’s professional bio, interests and a few assorted photos.

During the same time, the almond milk industry became popular and Silk, makers of the Silk milk among other products, sought to buy the domain from Mr. Almond, who ostensibly declined.

Silk, operating from Silk.com, then offered to develop Almond.com in a more professional manner, in exchange for Gary Almond’s participation in a Silk commercial.

The end result can be seen at Almond.com, and a nice surprise is hidden behind the logo.

What did the previous content at Almond.com look like?

Unfortunately, the Silk developers set up its robots.txt blocking all search engines, and thus any captures by the Internet Archive are disabled; for that purpose, check out Screenshots.com.

  1. From reading the letter that they wrote in mashable it looks like their were willing to pay just about any amount for the domain name.
