Verisign, managers of the .com and .net domain names, received a “sweet deal” when the ICANN president, Göran Marby, announced the approval of its .com contract.
The deal gives Verisign extended rights to increase .COM base prices by 7% during the last four years of its six year contract period. In return, ICANN will receive a total of $20 million dollars for “infrastructure improvements.”
In three weeks from today, Verisign will announce its quarterly report, and despite the current dire status of the global economy and millions of unemployed Americans, it’s expected to be a profitable quarter.
It’s most likely the reason why they are now waiving the domain restoration fee – a charge that is imposed through participating domain Registrars, and which can be as little as $25 or as much as $250 dollars.
The domain restoration fee is an artificial surcharge – a penalty – in the same way that credit cards and banks charge a fee for late payments. It represents no actual cost of keeping domain names in a “pending” status. In fact, during that period when a domain’s renewal fee is unpaid, most domain Registrars take over the domain’s landing page and monetize it!
