Verisign reports 359.8 million domains registered globally

Verisign released the Domain Name Industry Brief covering the fourth quarter of 2023; according to the report, there were 359.8 million domains registered globally.

The numbers correspond to a growth of 0.2% compared to Q3/2023, for a year over year growth of 8.9 million domain names (2.5%.)

According to the report, at the end of the fourth quarter of 2023, the cumulative domain name registrations for .com and .net top-level domains (TLDs) reached 172.7 million, reflecting a decline of 1.2 million registrations or 0.7% compared to the preceding quarter.

Year over year, there was a collective reduction of 1.0 million domain name registrations, constituting a 0.6% decrease. Specifically, the .com domain had 159.6 million registrations, while the .net domain had 13.1 million registrations as of December 31, 2023.

At the close of the fourth quarter of 2023, new registrations for .com and .net domains amounted to 9.0 million, down from 9.7 million registrations recorded in the same period of 2022.

The total registrations for country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs) reached 138.3 million by the end of the fourth quarter of 2023, marking an uptick of 0.2 million registrations or 0.2% compared to the third quarter of the same year. Year over year, ccTLDs saw a growth of 5.3 million registrations or 4.0%.

Meanwhile, the total registrations for new generic top-level domains (ngTLDs) stood at 31.8 million by the end of the fourth quarter of 2023, reflecting an increase of 1.6 million registrations or 5.3% compared to the third quarter of 2023. Year over year, ngTLDs experienced a rise of 4.4 million registrations or 15.9%.

Dot .com remains the #1 largest TLD, followed by .cn, .de, .net, .org, .uk, .nl,.ru, .br, and .au.
