Verisign, managers of .com and .net top level domains, has acquired the rights to dot .turkey as well.
.Turkey, a new generic top level domain about Thanksgiving, is aimed at American and Canadian domain investors, primarily.
“Spending more than $100 million for a .turkey gTLD might seem extraordinary for some, but to us is a long term investment,” said Verisign VP of domain acquisitions, John Smith.
“Every year, Americans consume more than 45 million turkeys on Thanksgiving. We are tapping a large potential buyer base, I assure you, not to mention the leftovers that become cold cuts,” added Smith.
By introducing .turkey to American consumers, Verisign expects sales to peak around Thanksgiving every year, with sales extending into the New Year’s festivities. That’s a longer active sales year than the Chinese domain market enjoys currently.
The $108 million dollar mega-investment should be recouped in as little as 33 years.
“If there’s a lesson we learned from our debacle with .XYZ, it’s to fake it til we make it. Expect .turkey domain sales to skyrocket, when priced at one penny, or less!” exclaimed John Smith, adding: “We are doing a great service to America, and domain investors worldwide. Happy Thanksgiving!”
Whether you love turkey or not, investing in a new gTLD requires a careful approach that uses restraint.
Dot .turkey hits the market before Christmas, directly from Verisign.
Happy Thanksgiving!
