Verisign, operators of the .com Registry, have released a “Domain Name Industry Brief” since 2004.
The latest edition spans Q1/2023 and here are the highlights:
- The first quarter of 2023 concluded with a total of 354.0 million domain name registrations across all top-level domains (TLDs), reflecting an increase of 3.5 million registrations or 1% compared to the previous quarter. On a year-over-year basis, there was a growth of 3.5 million registrations, also amounting to 1%.
- The combined domain name registrations for the .com and .net TLDs reached 174.8 million by the end of the first quarter of 2023. This represents a rise of 1.0 million registrations or 0.6% compared to the fourth quarter of 2022. In terms of year-over-year growth, there was an increase of 0.1 million registrations, equivalent to 0.1%. The .com TLD accounted for 161.6 million registrations, while the .net TLD had 13.2 million registrations as of March 31, 2023.
- New registrations for .com and .net domains totaled 10.3 million by the end of the first quarter of 2023, slightly surpassing the 10.2 million registrations recorded during the same period in 2022.
- Country-code TLDs (ccTLDs) accumulated a total of 135.7 million domain name registrations by the end of the first quarter of 2023, indicating an increase of 2.6 million registrations or 2.0% compared to the previous quarter. Year over year, ccTLDs experienced a growth of 2.3 million registrations or 1.7%.
- For new generic TLDs (ngTLDs), the total domain name registrations amounted to 27.3 million by the end of the first quarter of 2023. This figure reflects a decrease of 0.2 million registrations or 0.6% compared to the fourth quarter of 2022. However, ngTLDs witnessed a growth of 0.9 million registrations or 3.6% on a year-over-year basis.
