Now that Apple has officially demonstrated its plans for the notorious iCloud service, many more domainers are jumping on the Cloud bandwagon.
Let us remind you that the same happened in the past with .tel domains, 3D domains and other exotic TLDs and prefixes.
Those that register any keyword under the sun with “cloud” as the suffix are clearly the lemmings of domaining.
Gone are the days that even random combinations of strings produced a healthy PPC at least, all while hoping for some imaginary start-up to dish out a load of cash for an exotic combo, such as razorfish, snailgap, doodleflex etc.
“We haven’t yet gotten rid of our worthless 3D portfolio and here we go with another fad”, says Bob Lakey, a domainer from Illinois. “My gut feeling tells me that the cloud will be blown away within 5 years along with the atmosphere; people are looking for more tangible things to invest in.”
This lemming mentality among domainers is a reason why many domainer noobies disappear within a year – right at domain renewal time. Those that fall prey to the marketing skills of trend-pushers soon discover that the hole in their pocket is unpatchable.
Therefore, one needs to be very careful when investing in verticals or new TLDs.
