Shit happens.
This time, it happened without warning.
It was the perfect shitstorm: filesystem errors on a drive that was old enough to be replaced but we put it off considering a server move anyway. So it happened today, around 11am – the server crashed and the kernel could not load. We had to wait until the good old linux OS would be reloaded; the techs at Softlayer did a great job.
But after that, we were on our own to retrieve the data and restore everything from a drive that has been whispering its last breaths for a while.
Yikes. That was a close call and from now on a back-up server will be in short order.
