These days, domain names that contain the infamous “Chinese letter” subset of the Latin alphabet, are past their former glory.
A little over six months after achieving a peak price at approximately $2,600 dollars regardless of letter quality, domain “Chips” are failing to auction, for the most part.
If you follow domain auctions such as on Flippa, Sedo or GoDaddy, there are many unsold “Chips” in the $1,200 – $1,400 dollar range.
There are exceptions, of course: when the buyer wants *that* specific domain, as opposed to buying up domain “Chips.”
In other words, these sales are essentially “end user domain sales.”
Regardless, volume of such domains has increased, and the reason could be that Chinese buyers are reselling, witnessing their domain assets depreciate.
We have also seen savvy domain investors, such as Elequa, making a killing by selling “domain Chips” they hand-registered a decade or more ago. That’s the best ROI!
Westerners such as Tim Schoon, have found success at eBay auctions of short domains.
We keep track of short domains being sold among the Chinese: 2 to 4 letters in length, for the .CN, .COM and .NET TLDs.
As always, take a look at BenMi.com for some nice statistical data, in English no less. Who has time to learn Chinese? 😉
