Terminator Glasses: Google will be back

Apparently Google is about to roll out glasses that support “augmented reality” interaction; the kind of gadget that provides a heads-up display (HUD) like that used by fighter pilot helmets.

According to this report, the so-called “terminator glasses” – reminiscent of the glasses worn by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the Terminator movie – have some interesting features:

They […] look similar to thick-rimmed glasses that “normal people” wear [and they] … provide a display with a heads up computer interface. There are a few buttons on the arms of the glasses, but otherwise, they could be mistaken for normal glasses. […] the technology […] is likely a transparent LCD or AMOLED display […] it communicates directly with the Cloud over IP. […They] could use a phone’s Internet connection, through Wi-Fi or a low power Bluetooth 4.0.  The use-case is augmented reality that would tie into Google’s location services. A user can walk around with information popping up and into display -Terminator-style- based on preferences, location and Google’s information. Therefore, these things likely connect to the Internet and have GPS. They also likely run a version of Android.

So naturally, someone went ahead and registered the domain name, TerminatorGlasses.com

According to top WHOIS tool, DomainTools, the registrant’s information of this freshly registered domain name is private.

At first glance, the domain name TerminatorGlasses.com doesn’t seem to have any issues. It does not use “Google” anywhere and Terminator was a movie, right?

Unfortunately for the domain registrant, after perusing about 100 registered trademarks for “Terminator” at the USPTO, we found this one:

TERMINATOR – IC 009. US 021 023 026 036 038. G & S: PRE-RECORDED MOTION PICTURE FILMS, PRE-RECORDED VIDEO TAPES, LASER DISCS, COMPACT DISCS AND CD-ROMS ALL FEATURING SCIENCE FICTION MOVIES; AND GLASSES, SUNGLASSES AND PARTS FOR SUNGLASSES. FIRST USE: 19840000. FIRST USE IN COMMERCE: 19840000

It’s clear that the owner of the “Terminator” trademark targets glasses, sunglasses and parts thereof for the mark. It’s quite possible, therefore, to challenge the domain name TerminatorGlasses.com at the WIPO.

Meanwhile, Google has not released the upcoming name of those “Google goggles“. Surprisingly, GoogleGoggles.com is also registered since 2006, and available for purchase; perhaps Google will now realize its trademark is being squatted upon.

it’s clear what the domain owner needs to do.. wait a few more years for Google to invent Google Time – the world’s first time machine. Then travel back in time to 1984 and stop the Terminator trademark registrant from filing its trademark on Glasses and Sunglasses.

However Google will have to send one of its own agents back in time as well to stop this from happening, because as we all know, if the trademark applicant never files the trademark for Terminator Glasses, then Google never comes up with the idea to create Google Glasses in the future, and this entire article will never have happened!!! 😀
