“Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana” – according to Groucho Marx.
It has now been exactly six years since the Dallas Cowboys team of Internet wizards fumbled it, tossing the ball during the TRAFFIC 2007 East domain auction.
In a story that many young domain investors are not aware of, the domain Cowboys.com was auctioned by Moniker; the dollar amount of $275,000 was deemed to be the winning bid, as placed by the Dallas Cowboys team.
In a shocking about face, the bidders from Dallas claimed that they were made to believe the actual amount was just $275 – a price that matches the worth of the flip phone Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, still uses.
It is unclear what type of embarrassing exchange followed, but the bottom line is that the Dallas Cowboys lost the domain game at that point in time, allowing a team of domain investors to step in and promptly grab Cowboys.com for $370,000 dollars.
Although Cowboys.com is currently being used as a gay dating portal, many believe that eventually the Dallas Cowboys will come to their senses and spend some big money on the generic domain name associated with the team.
We’ll have to wait and see how well Broncos.com will do at TRAFFIC 2013 next week.
