The owner of the domain name Twitch.com hit the proverbial jackpot yesterday, as Amazon announced the acquisition of Twitch Interactive for $970 million dollars in an all-cash deal.
There is one minute detail: Twitch operates from Twitch.tv.
Evolving from Justin.tv, a personal broadcast medium from 2007 to Twitch.tv in February of 2014 was the result of a corporate merger. While Justin.tv was shut down, Twitch Interactive took over, attracting more than 55 million monthly viewers to its game streaming channels.
There are more than one million broadcasters at this time, making Twitch a traffic generator of immense proportions, producing 2% of Internet traffic.
It is safe to say that the matching dot com, Twitch.com, has become a seven figure domain name, something that will definitely become a priority for the founders of Twitch.tv; having a lot of capital will allow them to purchase Twitch.com outright, particularly since the Twitch.com owner never parked it or monetized it but provided blog content all along.
As a final note, Twitch.com was registered in 1997 according to DomainTools; its current registrant has owned it since at least 2000, and he’s most likely the original registrant as well.
If Amazon really cared about the .com they would have secured it before releasing news they paid almost a billion dollars for a non .com website
