Several violent fights erupted in New York City during the official launch of the dot .NYC gTLD.
Thousands of potential registrants of .NYC domains lined up overnight outside of the dot .NYC Registry offices in downtown Manhattan; chaos ensued.
“I came to claim my Greek deli name domain and have been waiting since 4am to secure it,” said Spyro Angelo Pappas of Astoria.
“What to do, some cybersquatta wanna getta beta feta domain huh! This is a lotta pain for this domain, Jesus Christ!” exclaimed Pappas, shaking his head.
Trash cans were set on fire and the NYPD stepped in to restore order.
By noon, more than 100,000 .NYC domains had been registered.
“I love NYC and I wanted to be here on the skreet for the cause, knowamsayin, this is our domain, not them thieves from Florida can have it, knowamsayin! Sheet!” exclaimed DeMarcus Johnson of Brooklyn, holding onto his paperwork proving he’s a NYC resident.
Several fights, such as the one below, broke out in the subway; hopefully things will be calmer tomorrow in the Big Apple and the latest geo-gTLD.
