Yesterday’s article about the domainer’s checklist for the next ICANN meeting in Colombia generated some interesting feedback.
While David Castello and ‘Tricolorro‘ seemed to agree with our statement about the dangers of picking such a location as the meeting point for international travelers, some Mexican guy told us we’re ‘idiots‘.
Mierda!
With that in mind – that we’re idiots because we are eager to disclose the perils of certain locales and question the logic behind ICANN’s exotic choices – we decided to suggest some similar locations for future consideration by ICANN.
Mogadishu, Somalia (as suggested by David Castello) sounds like a great starting point. The inviting beaches, trendy pirate lifestyle and great return on investment are tempting for an ICANN meeting. As a domainer, be prepared to secure a $10 million personal insurance in case your boat gets attacked by friendly Somalis.
Caracas, Venezuela is a beautiful city. Shame it’s called the “murder capital of the world“. With drug cartels and poverty, the capital of Venezuela ranks as the highest for murder and crime in the world, including murders, kidnappings and rapes. Leave all your valuables behind, including your domain portfolio passwords.
Grozny, Chechnya – The city is not run by government officials, but by gangsters and Russia mafia outnumbers the police force by far. A Russian is murdered here every 20 minutes – almost 85 murders a day. Prostitution and drugs, kindnappings and rapes make this city a perfect and challenging location for an intense ICANN meeting. Bring your own uzi.
Baghdad, Iraq – It doesn’t matter who you are, you’re not safe in Iraq – a nation that is overwhelmed with crime and violence. Since the US intervention in 2003, a civil war has led to more than 650,000 civilian casualties. Saddam Hussein destroyed this country’s reputation and future. A perfect location for the next ICANN meeting, as long as you have full body armor and have trained with the US Marines.
Detroit, USA – On April 6, Detroit’s police chief, Warren Evans, reported that homicides fell 25% in the first quarter of 2010 compared with the same period last year. Hours later, however, came sobering news: Five men had been shot, four of them fatally, and police found another man in a burning car. Why outsource crime? Keep it at home, host the next ICANN meeting in Motown.

So true! ICANN is more of a travel club for insiders.

Even the freeloaders on the “fellowship” program and other “volunteers” going for free apply more often to go to Paris, instead of to New Delhi!
ICANN is spending $2.126 million on a meeting that fewer than 1000 people attend:

One could instead buy everyone Verizon FiOS for a year, a 42″ HDTV, conferencing software, and still be way ahead financially. Of course, they’re not spending the $2.126 million equally on everyone…..while many will freeload at fancy hotels and expensive air travel, especially staff and selected ICANN insiders, domain registrants who pay for the whole shebang through their ICANN fees will only get gruel.
Innovation and ICANN don’t go together. But please join the ‘Club Med’ of domaining 😀
Am not surprise if they book a trip to outer space.
