In a little over a month from now, the .XYZ registry will be facing the one year anniversary of the “penny” mega sale.
Almost a year ago, dot .XYZ domains could be had for 1 cent a pop, no questions asked, no limits.
Millions of .XYZ domains were registered, more than doubling the numbers from 2.5 million to more than 5 million .XYZ domains.
Many domain investors registered thousands of .XYZ domains; after all, 1000 .XYZ domains only cost $10.
A year later, those domains are about to expire, and faced with renewal costs in the thousands of dollars, some are being placed on the chopping block.
For example, a thread on NamePros is offering a total of 2700 .XYZ domains at $5 each.
Two weeks after it was started, there has not been a single update indicating a sale, and it’s quite possible that the bulk of these domains will be dropped.
It’s mathematically probable, that .XYZ will lose the majority of its “penny” registrations, and if the registry processes these expired domains as expected, .XYZ will quite possibly lose about 50% of its current numbers, give or take 5% – the average retention rate of such promotions.
We’ll have to wait and see the magnitude of the drop, which we addressed last year.
