Domain transfers past expiration : It won’t work with eNom!

In a recent article about domain transfers past expiration, we came to the conclusion that they are feasible.

Most domain registrars these days take a non-aggressive stance to losing customers, in hopes that overall they’ll attract more.

Unfortunately, that’s not the case with eNom and its antiquated back-end interface, so an update is due on the subject of domain transfers to another registrar, past a domain’s expiration date.

As one can see in the picture below, a domain that expired yesterday cannot have anything changed, including getting the authorization transfer code. The “Manage Domain” drop down is inactive.

The provision to unlock the domain is enabled, but such a move is useless without being able to obtain the auth code via email.

While there is a chance that a ticket request would resolve this matter, it should not be that difficult to resolve without customer support intervention. So the only option at this point, is to renew the domain.

Tucows acquired eNom from Rightside, which subsequently was acquired by Donuts, Inc.

They must provide your auth code and unlock the domain.

My domain name has just expired. Can my registrar require me to pay for a renewal before I can transfer to a new registrar?

No. Your new registrar of choice can initiate a transfer request on an expired domain name once they receive the required authorization from you. Expiration or nonrenewal of a domain name is not a valid reason for denial of a transfer request.

Note that if the registrar has already begun the deletion process on the domain name and its status shows it to be within a 30-day Redemption Grace Period, the name must be restored by your current registrar before it can be transferred.

Nick – Yes, they must provide the auth code, but it’s not done from within the control panel.

To the point, yes, with a phone call, they will unlock and send auth code. I’ve had it happen several times and they offer without any hesitation. I think the current setup is just a limitation of their system
