Internet help desk : Former Marchex #domain as old as viral video by the same title

The early days of the Internet service providers were dominated by the quest for the perfect “help desk.”

Customers calling in an ISP’s help line to get help for a myriad different issues related to the Internet, were the daily bread and butter of Internet support technicians’ routine.

The domain InternetHelpDesk.com was registered in 2000 by Yun Ye, founder of Ult. Search of Hong Kong.

In 2005, the domain was sold to Marchex along with the Ult. Search portfolio, for $164 million dollars.

Subsequently, it was sold to GoDaddy as part of a 200,000 domain name portfolio.

GoDaddy wants $7,299 dollars for the domain InternetHelpDesk.com, and although it’s a true generic, it’s also a domain relic of another era, before the outsourcing of support desks to countries such as India made such true Internet help desks obsolete.

Sadly, the domain was never developed, so who would spend $7k+ to do that now? It’s a rhetorical question, by the way.

A viral video from 2001 shows the attitude of the Internet help desk technicians of that era. We know, we were there. 😀
