Job.com applies for the registration of the matching trademark at the USPTO

My Job Matcher Inc., operators of the ultra premium domain name Job.com, have applied for the registration of the matching trademark, JOB.COM, at the USPTO.

The mark consists of the letters J O B followed by a smaller circle containing the letters COM situated to give the impression of JOB.COM. The J is broken where the ascender and descender meet. The B is also broken, leaving a gap where the ascender and the bowl meet. The circle containing COM is located just above and to the right of the bowl of the B.

In other words, this is a highly stylized trademark and not a wordmark. Last year, Job.com applied for the registration of the wordmark in a separate application at the USPTO which is still pending.

Registered in 1994, Job.com has been in the possession of the trademark applicant since at least 2001, according to the filing. However, Job.com was acquired by MyJobMatcher.com on Oct 12, 2017 in a Cash & Stock deal, which indicates that IP assets were transferred as well.

Here are the product and service classes that the mark was applied for:

Why was JOB.COM applied for as a trademark at the USPTO?

It’s an ongoing trend among owners of generic domain names, following the decision by SCOTUS on the Booking.com trademark application.

Since then, dozens of generic domain names have been applied to be registered as trademarks, inclusive of the TLD.

As of January 5th, 2021, BOOKING.COM is a registered trademark with the USPTO.

Will these applications become the new norm? Watch this video from NamesCon Online 2020.
