Apple revealed its “Dynamic Island” alongside the launch of iPhone 14 Pro during the Apple event on September 7th. The Dynamic Island feature is a shape-shifting overlay that accommodates app alerts and other interactive content on the iPhone 14 Pro display.
It’s interesting to note that Apple applied for the registration of the mark DYNAMIC ISLAND at the USPTO, on September 9th, 2022. The mark’s application cites an international, pending application for the mark in Jamaica, with a date of application July 12, 2022.
By applying first in Jamaica, Apple ensured privacy for the feature, as Jamaican trademark applications aren’t shared publicly. Apple also secured its spot in the queue for “Dynamic Island” at the USPTO claiming priority.
As the application states:
At this time, the applicant has another basis for registration (Section 1(a) or Section 1(b)) and does NOT intend to rely on Section 44(e) as the basis for registration, but is only asserting a valid claim of priority.
Meanwhile, Apple did not acquire the domain name DynamicIsland.com which was registered on January 2, 2020.
