The Chagos Archipelago or Chagos Islands is a group of seven atolls made of more than 60 islands in the Indian Ocean. The islands are located 300 miles south of the Maldives.
The UK is in possession of these islands, currently, with the exception of Diego Garcia that was leased to the US for strategic purposes. The current status of Diego Garcia revolves around its use as a US military base until 2036.
Very recently, the UK agreed to hand over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, ending years of a bitter dispute over Britain’s last African colony.
There is, however, a problem: The Chagos Islands have been allocated the .IO ccTLD that took off in popularity among companies and investors in recent years.
What will happen to several hundred thousand .IO domains upon the islands’ transfer to Mauritius?
We asked several important domainers for feedback about the pickle that .IO domain registrants will find themselves in – here’s what they said:
Rick Schwartz: Folks, I’ve been saying it for years! These damn domain noobs don’t listen to my advice. If you invest in pigeonshit domains, you will get screwed like this. If I had .IO domains I’d point them to BeatOff.com or BestPussy.com and teach those Britons a good lesson!
Drew Rosener: Every domain has its intrinsic value defined by 4 or 5 essential metrics. As the best domain broker in the universe since before the birth of Jesus H. Christ, I am certain that only my .IO domains would survive this violent transfer of ownership. Listen, I’ve been a fishmonger and I can tell you, the Indian Ocean has the best mahi in the world. If I could ship fish by the tonne I can sell thousands of .IO domains until 2076 and beyond.
Frank Schilling: I no longer invest in domain names but if you have .IO currently, here’s my advice: Switch to .KY as fast as you can! David & Michael Castello: As the Castello Brothers, we think alike. It’s .com or bust, buddy. We won’t feel sorry for .IO owners because that’s a loser’s approach to domain investing. Let’s see how you sell those 10,000 .IO domains you registered in 2017 bro! It’s not happening. In fact, other ccTLDs should be shut down as we have the best geo-domains such as GuadeloupeIslands.com and PapuaNewGuinea.com if the Chagos goes down – we will gladly sell you subdomains on them!
Mike Mann: I believe that it’s the fault of liberals, especially Kamala Harris; her failed foreign policy is to blame. The US should enforce its strategic position in the region, send out a few carriers. I have very few .IO domains, about 95,000 or so, which I will drop in protest. I think the future lies with .co.il domains, hands down.
