Cryptos.com: Bitcoin Center NYC founder files for #trademark registration

Cryptos.com founder, Nick Spanos, has applied for the registration of the matching mark, CRYPTOS.COM, at the USPTO.

Mr. Spanos, an early adopter of BTC, is the founder of Bitcoin Center NYC, dedicated to promoting Bitcoin, educating the public, and hosting the local Bitcoin community.

The mark is applied for services related to “Providing technology information in the field of cryptocurrency.” The mark’s first use in commerce is listed as June 24, 2004.

Crypto domains are extremely popular as aftermarket acquisitions; the domain Cryptos.com appears to have been sold via BuyDomains in 2013.

Why was CRYPTOS.COM applied for as a trademark at the USPTO?

It’s an ongoing trend among owners of generic domain names, following the decision by SCOTUS on the Booking.com trademark application.

Since then, dozens of generic domain names have been applied to be registered as trademarks, inclusive of the TLD. We report on these applications, and so far several have been decided upon.

As of January 5th, 2021, BOOKING.COM is a registered trademark with the USPTO.

Will these applications become the new norm? Watch this video from NamesCon Online 2020.

  1. John Berryhill says:

It’s obvious from the application that Mr. Spanos has no idea what he’s doing. He doesn’t understand what is a Specimen of Use, but at least that’s consistent with the lack of any actual use of “CRYPTOS.COM” as a mark at the corresponding website.
