Envelopes.com: #Domain operators apply for the registration of the matching trademark

New York based Jam Paper & Envelope, operators of the domain Envelopes.com, have filed an application for the registration of the matching mark, ENVELOPES.COM.

The mark consists of the term ENVELOPES.COM with a stylized envelope above the letter “L” to letter “C”. It is applied for the following services:

On-line retail store services featuring featuring stationery and paper goods.

Registered in 1998, the domain Envelopes.com lists the beginning of 2010 as the date of first use of the mark in interstate commerce. It appears that the company upgraded from the domain ActionEnvelope.com at the time, indicating that the domain Envelopes.com was acquired. There is no listing for Envelopes.com at NameBio. The company also owns and operates the generic domain Folders.com, for which it holds a registered, stylized mark.

Why was ENVELOPES.COM applied for as a trademark at the USPTO?

It’s an ongoing trend among owners of generic domain names, following the decision by SCOTUS on the Booking.com trademark application.

Since then, dozens of generic domain names have been applied to be registered as trademarks, inclusive of the TLD.

As of January 5th, 2021, BOOKING.COM is a registered trademark with the USPTO.

Will these applications become the new norm? Watch this video from NamesCon Online 2020.
