Verisign, the appointed overlords of the .com and .net TLDs, publicly state that the gTLD onslaught is not a threat to their business.
In private, however, this may not be the case.
Leaked memos from the Verisign corporate offices in Virginia indicate frustration and agony over the future of the .com, the biggest money maker on the planet with more than 120 million registrations.
To ensure that its world dominant position is retained, Verisign is rolling out a new product called Quantum Domain Registry.
“With QDR you will be able to utilize the latest advancements in technology, and we are talking about cutting edge, hard core stuff,” says Morgan Freedman of Verisign.
“In a world where chaos and destruction utilize computers to spread death and disease, our Quantum Domain Registry uses quantum physics to best protect your business interests.” adds Freedman.
The new Verisign service accepts QDR registrations, applications for a particular domain that are not executed, until someone queries that particular domain.
Unlike past attempts by Verisign to lock down a domain regardless of registration intent, the QDR approach only bills the registrant when several queries for the domain hit the Verisign servers, not before.
“With QDR we are expanding on our established footprint as a domain Registry; our strength is in our vision and quality of service. With QDR you will be able to reserve a domain, and only pay for it once it hits a traffic threshold. Bazinga!” exclaims Morgan Freedman.
Verisign is expected to accumulate more than 25 million domains through the QDR process, in the second quarter of 2014 alone.
