Aron Meystedt, the domain investor and serial entrepreneur behind such domain assets as Copier.com, Tablets.com and Symbolics.com, has deleted the latter in a protest that is expected to shock many.
Symbolics.com, the oldest hand-registered domain name on the Internet, is no more.
“It was a symbolic act, a digital self-immolation if you may, to raise awareness about poverty, government interference and violence against women and minorities,” said Aron Meystedt at a press conference.
“By deleting the oldest domain name, I want to emphasize the need for re-birth, the human craving for life and freedom. I am setting Symbolics.com free” added Meystedt, to a suddenly silent crowd.
Many had expected an anniversary party; instead, the deletion of Symbolics.com, 28 years after it was registered on that fateful day of March 15th, 1985, is a clear indication that a lot of domain investors realize they cannot take their digital assets with them.
“Life is short and I want to be remembered not as the owner of the oldest domain on the Internet, but rather, as a caring human being who shared knowledge and resources, dedicating my spirit to all humanity,” said Meystedt to an applauding group of journalists.
The domain registry will keep Symbolics.com in delete status indefinitely, as a tribute to its heritage. For more information on the event and to request a press kit, contact Mr. Meystedt at XF Investments.
UGH. I hit the wrong freakin’ button!
RENEW! not DELETE.
Aron – Jokes aside, congratulations on that fine domain and happy 28th. ๐
