Corporate domains : 01.org is a two-digit domain owned by Intel corporation

Intel corporation.

Tech giant, Intel, acquired the two digit domain, 01.org, a few years ago.

According to Namebio, Intel paid $25,000 dollars in 2011 to get 01.org, a domain signifying the basis of all things digital: zero and one.

What is 01.org being used for? Here’s what Intel says:

01.org is where we pull together open source work that Intel engineers are involved in. Here’s where you can find projects we maintain and contribute to in one location, from the most widely known, the OpenStack, to very focused projects, like Intel Graphics for Linux and Developer Journey, to the ones we started here at Intel and provide full hosting for, like Assistive Context-Aware Toolkit (ACAT) and the Crosswalk.

Each project has its own micro-site, where it’s easy to learn about the project and engage in the community. And Intel open source maintainers and developers will find all the tools needed to host a project.

Short domain names such as 01.org are very useful for projects and redirects, and it’s quite evident that Intel acknowledges that, having developed a full, active web site and service on it.

01.org is a domain name that was registered in 1998.

I sold 01.org to Intel in May 2011, they contacted me directly with their @intel.com email address and mentioned clearly that it will be used for an open source project. I’m very glad to see this domain name goes to the right company and being put in good use. It’s worth more than the deal price but it’s one of my favorite sale. 🙂
