Thousands of domain investors fell for a recent NFT fad, leading to the creation and fragmentation of premium domains.
Also called “fractional domains,” these blockchained domains allegedly represent the future of domain investing.
“I joined in an NFT for the domain SEX.com along with 45,000 other domain investors,” says Sam Jones, a domain investor from Peoria, Illinois.
“Little did I know that my shares were worthless: I could not get a SEX.com email address or add photos of my girlfriend who’s a stay at home mom and Onlyfans performer,” added Sam Jones.
Fractional domain owners don’t have much of a collective chance to decide what will happen to the domains; they are simply buying a fraction of a domain owned by someone else, helping with the renewal fees, all while their investment remains exposed to UDRPs and other types of litigation.
On the flip side, many domain owners who decided to fragment or fractionalize their premium asset on the blockchain are now having second thoughts:
“When I listed SexInRestaurants.com on OpenSea I received about 40 share buyers; now that I received a buy offer for $250,000 I need to get all the shares back. Seven shareholders don’t agree and I am stuck here pondering about my options,” says Timothy McVeigh of Lockport, NY.
