The registration of the dot .Bawston gTLD was refused by ICANN, after several months of lobbying among Internet technocrats led to no compromise.
Aimed at the booming online businesses of Boston, Massachusetts, dot .Bawston came two points short of the fourteen it needed to be approved.
“It is unfortunate that dot .Bawston, a premium gTLD, did not receive the respect it deserved all along,” said Mick O’Leary, CEO for the Go Bawston! Registry.
“What if there is a dot .Boston, how can this be confused for the original brand of our city that we applied for, makes no sense really,” added O’Leary.
The refusal of dot .Bawston puts hundreds of jobs in imminent danger, as Boston residents employed by the Go Bawston! Registry are now left without anything to look forward to.
“ICANN is killing the local Boston economy with this decision, and I can’t see how Boston will recover from this one,” said Mick O’Leary, adding: “We’re wicked fucked!”
