Grayscale dropped Greyscale.com; domain got auctioned

Grayscale Investments is a digital asset management firm that helps investors buy cryptocurrencies. Grayscale is one of the biggest crypto asset managers in the world, operating from the domain name Grayscale.com.

Meanwhile, grayscale is a series of regularly spaced tones ranging from black to white through intermediate shades of gray.

Greyscale—spelled with an “E”—is also a valid word and is primarily used in British English, while “grayscale” is the preferred spelling in American English.

It appears that Grayscale, the company, allowed this alternate spelling of its brand to expire and drop; Greyscale.com was caught by DropCatch where it was auctioned off during the course of three days.

The auction closed today with DropCatch account “contact” spending $15,249 dollars to win the domain name Greyscale.com. The DropCatch AI appears to have failed to identify this alternate spelling, as seen below:

Originally registered in 2001, Greyscale.com was once owned by Marchex, which was acquired by GoDaddy in 2015; the domain became part of the NameFind portfolio. It was then acquired by Grayscale Investments for an unknown amount in 2017.
