Merriam-Webster adds selfie, hashtag, tweep, unfriend to 2014 edition of dictionary

Thousands of catfish pouting selfies will finally receive recognition by their tweeps.

The 2014 edition of the Merriam-Webster dictionary, finally adds the words selfie, hashtag, tweep, unfriend and others – for a total of 150 new words that will finally stop producing red underlines in your favorite editor.

Some of them, like fangirl, were first introduced in 1934. Fracking, in 1953 and selfie is already 12 years old. Thank goodness, twerking didn’t make the cut.

While crowdfunding and steampunk made it, a pair of very important words did not.

The words domainer and domaining are not in the 2014 edition, unfortunately; more proof that the world has yet to recognize the efforts of Rick Schwartz, Frank Schilling and other domain pioneers to educate the general masses of the Internet.

Will they appear in the 2015 edition? 😀

Stop Press! New ‘Urban Dictionary’ word for Group Selfie = Palfie (selfie with a pal or with a group of pals). 🙂
I got it accepted the other day.

As for ‘Domainer’ etc. Absolutely must push for that one!

Just to be sure , since they are going into the dictionary, is it ‘hashrag’ ‘hasthtag’ or could it be ‘hashtag’?

    JamesL – Good catch, fixed.
