Florida Senator, Gwen Margolis (D), has introduced a bill that if it passes unchallenged, will seriously harm the affiliate market in Florida.
Titled “SB 202: Tax on Sales, Use, and Other Transactions” the bill aims at establishing a “nexus” or home base for all retailers that offer affiliate programs.
Essentially, if you’re making affiliate income by retailers that are based in another state, these retailers would have to collect sales tax on your behalf, and give it to the State of Florida.
This type of bill would never work, for the simple reason that retailers out of state would simply block all such affiliate programs for Florida residents.
Missy Ward, founder of Affiliate Summit – the biggest affiliate conference in the US – explains the gravity of the situation for all Florida affiliate marketers, at her personal blog, MissyWard.com.
Those of you out of state that enroll in affiliate programs, pay attention closely – it can happen in other US states as well.
