ProtonMail, the encrypted email service, acquired the short domain PM.me a year ago.
When we shared the news, we were under the impression that the new service, to be used as a shortcut, was imminent.
It took ProtonMail a full year before rolling out PM.me to its users. Yesterday’s announcement stated the following:
“Starting today, we are making it possible for everyone to add a @pm.me email address to your ProtonMail account, at no cost!”
Why was the PM.me domain chosen? ProtonMail explains:
We like pm.me for several reasons, and ultimately we think it’s a good choice. First, at 4 letters long, it is pretty much as short as you can make a domain.
Furthermore, it is a clever word play, as PM is the universal abbreviation for “private message”, and keeping your messages and communications private (as they should be) is precisely what ProtonMail does. Thus, we like to think of pm.me as “private message me” or “ProtonMail me“.
The new feature can be used to both receive and send emails under the new PM.me domain, but only paid users can send email from the short variant.
Dot .ME is the national ccTLD of Montenegro, that has been using its brandable top level domain extension for marketing purposes, successfully.
