Remember that old workplace cliche, “there’s no I in teamwork” ?
When you come up with an idea at work, and register domains to support its course before it gets officially approved, don’t expect to get all the glory.
In fact, what happens most of the time is watching your idea becoming a free for all, sometimes through the actions of a friend.
A Reddit poster is sharing his frustration over how his involvement with a project he came up with, was adopted by the company, but not before he had registered some domains for his idea.
“I work at a company where I’m involved in the web/ecommerce dept. I had an idea and bought several domains pertaining to it a while back, and now they’re trying to steal my idea and pass it off as their own while asking me to work on it for them, and they even asked if one of the domains I purchased be used (without them knowing I purchased it previously).
Now, how do I leverage this into my favor without giving too much info away, or what’s the best move to make now?”
Needless to say, in such cases an employee pretty much surrenders all creations to his employer, and such fine details are found buried not too deep into the agreement one signs at employment time.
Most the the responses, despite lacking a qualified legal background, agree that our friend has no ground to stand on.
