Sedo mixup: Periods and commas

Sedo's iconic Helga-Alice von Susteren is German and she uses periods instead of commas.

In Europe, the period “.” is used in numbers to separate thousands, the way that in the US the comma “,” is utilized.

Reversely, in Europe the comma “,” is used instead of a period “.” to denote decimal places.

Confused yet?

Sedo is a German company but with offices in the UK and the US, it’s important to use a standard format.

In that sense, when displaying fractions of a dollar, the notation “300 USD plus 25 cents” would be best to use. When displaying thousands, such as “25000 USD” there should be no comma after the “25”, as it’d mean “$25” in Europe.

Surprisingly, this auction page displays the number of hits using the European notation with a period to separate groups of thousands (25.283  visitors) all while displaying the current high bid using the US notation (1,700).

Oh well. It’s Friday and all is forgiven. 😀
