Verisign needs to provide more data regarding its “top 10 domain keyword” trends

Verisign domain report.

Verisign manages .com and .net domain names.

Every month, like clockwork, Verisign blogs about the “Top 10 Trending Keywords” in .com and .net registrations.

As the managers of .com and .net domains, Verisign has direct access to valuable data that it uses to extract the most common words in domain registrations.

Also like clockwork, Verisign sends out the same email notices, replicated by several bloggers at a time. Replication of data does not make it more important.

We don’t publish such information, because it’s useless in this format and type of presentation.

No offense to the hard working folks at Verisign’s marketing department, but they need to tweak their presentation quite a bit to get us hooked. 😉

For example, here is what we’d like to see from Verisign with regards to their top 10 domain keyword trends:

  • Data should be presented in a usable format, e.g. text. They provide a table for .com and .net rendered as an image.
  • There is no information about the metrics. How many thousands of instances per keyword? What percentage of domain registrations do they represent?
  • Information needs to appear along a timeline as well. Are there repeat keywords that span several weeks, months or years?
  • It’d be great to see the percentage of first year anniversary drops for such domain keyword trends; that’d indicate whether registering viral keywords is worth it.

This is the bare minimum in changes that we’d like to see.

Data is important when shared in a format that is usable. So please, Verisign, make that happen with your next release!
