Opt in vs. opt out: GoDaddy vs. Google

GoDaddy opted in all Afternic accounts to its newly promoted “Afternic Boost” service. While free through August initially, it’s now September and the service will cost on average 5% more to utilize.

In other words, if you haven’t opted out intentionally, you are still opted-in. GoDaddy decided that signing you up to a service that costs 5% more on average is for your own good. Of course, there is no guarantee about the expanded platform’s performance, hence a GoDaddy disclaimer about just that.

Google also announced that its advertisers will now have the option to disable ads that they pay for from appearing on parked domains. Unlike GoDaddy, Google opted its advertisers out of parked domain utilization, which they can then enable if they so wish.

In that respect, Google placed its customers’ interest above its own profit interest. Meanwhile, GoDaddy will continue making 5% more on average from domain sales in accounts that their owners forgot, or were not aware, that Afternic Boost was already enabled.

And this is the difference between a great company and a company that makes no sense.

Recons – The increase in fees is 5%. I didn’t present it as a percentage of the fees.
